My principal interest is microbial symbiosis. I focus on beneficial associations between thiotrophic bacteria and multicellular eukaryotes from chemosynthesis-based ecosystems to test and further develop models on the ecology and evolution of interspecies cooperation.
We concentrate on two model systems, the deep-sea hydrothermal vent tubeworm Riftia pachyptila and Cand. Endoriftia persephone from the East Pacific Rise and the shallow-water wood fall ciliate Zoothamnium niveum and Cand. Thiobios zoothamnicoli from the Northern Adriatic Sea.
We use ambient and high-pressure flow through respirometers to experimentally manipulate both systems and to cultivate the ciliate symbiosis. In both systems we currently study the initiation, maintenance, and breakdown of cooperation.
